The plan was simple: a winter wonderland in Breckenridge. However, the reality was quite different. This year, Colorado has experienced one of the lowest snowpacks in recorded history. As a photographer in this beautiful state, such conditions are not ideal. Yet, one must adapt and pivot. Sometimes, these unexpected changes lead to even better outcomes.

I must admit, I am a bit biased because I know this couple personally. Caitlin and Bo were a joy to work with. I approached them with the idea of photographing at Sapphire Point—one of my preferred locations for couples photography in Breckenridge. Caitlin and Bo have been together for several years, yet they had not enjoyed the best luck with photos taken by friends and family. Thus, it felt like the perfect opportunity to truly capture their relationship in a meaningful way.

We began the session by easing into the atmosphere—getting comfortable, taking a few standard shots, and simply feeling each other out. However, once everyone relaxed, everything clicked into place. Caitlin and Bo naturally brought out the best in each other. Their laughter made my job not only easier but also far more enjoyable.

For this shoot, I utilized my Canon RP paired with the RF 70–200mm f/4 and my Canon R6 Mark II with the 15–35mm f/2.8. This tried-and-true setup provides me with the flexibility necessary for both portraits and environmental shots. That said, this session confirmed something I have been contemplating for quite some time—I am ready to add a true portrait lens to my kit. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.4 L VCM has been on my radar since its release, and for good reason. Its incredible autofocus, beautiful compression, and that creamy bokeh elevate every image.

But let us return to Caitlin and Bo.

One of the most delightful aspects of this shoot was embracing their unique style. They brought a vibrant Colorado western vibe—complete with cowboy hats, western jackets, steel-toe boots, and bolo ties. This ensemble felt entirely natural and authentic. We experimented with various compositions and creative ideas to highlight their energy. The ultimate goal is not merely to take photos, but to create something that genuinely reflects them.

The Golden Hour Experience

As we approached the conclusion of our couples photo session, I found myself eagerly anticipating the final moments. We wrapped up by running through an open meadow with Buffalo Mountain in the background during the enchanting golden hour. You simply cannot surpass that light. Witnessing two people in love fully let go—laughing, running, and jumping into each other’s arms—creates moments that cannot be fabricated. This is the essence of what I strive to capture.
